Alumna recognised at Malaysia Australia Alumni Council Awards

Dubbed the ‘Iron Lady of Architecture’, alumna Datuk Pei Ing Tan (BArch(Hons) 1984) has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award at the 2016 Malaysia Australia Alumni Council Awards in Kuala Lumpur.

Pei Ing Tan Having graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning (ABP) Pei Ing Tan is one of Malaysia’s leading architects, with a string of iconic designs to her name.

She is founder and principal of PI Architect, a Kuala Lumpur firm that has received accolades for projects including the Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya and Le Meridien Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. She consulted with the ABP during the construction of the award-winning Melbourne School of Design building.

Datuk Tan is a former President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the first female to be appointed to the role in its 90-year history, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. She has founded several charitable initiatives including the Malaysian chapter of Architecture for Humanity and the Architects Meet the Public forum.

Earlier this year she was conferred the title of Datuk, the Malaysian government’s highest honour, in recognition of her significant contribution to improving the nation’s built environment.
