COVID-19 Emergency Appeal

We are facing an unprecedented situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, one that requires us all to deal with an unimaginable amount of disruption and – for some – the loss of loved ones, businesses and jobs.

The COVID-19 situation requires our firm and immediate response. As a valued member of this community, be part of this effort to boost the important work of our world-class researchers, support our students in need and help build our strong University of Melbourne community.

Research Response Fund

Lab

The University of Melbourne has a global reputation for life-changing innovations and discoveries. Drawing on our broad expertise, our current focus is to harness the brilliant minds of our researchers and to make a real impact in the next 60 days.

We are contributing to the international effort to diagnose and treat COVID-19, such as through clinical drug trials (undertaken by the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity – a partnership between the University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Hospital) and the urgent design of new ventilators. The many critical projects underway are working to mitigate the stress on our healthcare systems in Australia and beyond.

This is vital work that will save lives. The COVID-19 Research Response Fund will give experts across many fields the best opportunity to translate their work into immediate impact.

All funds donated to the COVID-19 Research Response Fund and the COVID-19 Emergency Student Support Fund will go directly to these areas of need and will be spent immediately.

Emergency Student Support Fund

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused financial stress for many of our students. Many have lost their jobs or had their income severely reduced, resulting in unexpected financial hardship.

To support them during this time, we have introduced a new needs-based COVID-19 Emergency Student Support Fund that will provide financial assistance to both Australian and international undergraduate and graduate students. You can help us to support students to meet their immediate financial needs, including, for example, ensuring that they have the right technology for digital learning.

All funds donated to the COVID-19 Research Response Fund and the COVID-19 Emergency Student Support Fund will go directly to these areas of need and will be spent immediately.

Be part of a global community

Physical isolation is not synonymous with social isolation and the relationships you develop today will resonate long beyond this situation. Given the challenges that many may well be facing – in your family, workplace or community – we do understand that giving financially may not be an option for you.

You are vital as an advocate for your University. You can make a massive difference by telling others about our critical research, encouraging our researchers and students, or by becoming a mentor to students looking for career and life advice.

Stay informed and connected

The University will be publishing a series of online panel discussions about COVID-19 response in the coming weeks, following on from the success of our first expert panel discussion in March.

You can watch the extensive range of public lectures available online or listen to the world-class University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Now is the time to appreciate our collective impact as one University community.

Thank you in advance for your support.
