Eliza Redfern - Bachelor of Agriculture
Having worked at a veterinary clinic since she was 15, Eliza had always imagined she would study Veterinary Science. At the Werribee Campus Open Day, Eliza’s mother suggested she look into Agriculture. Her response? “I don’t want to be a farmer”. But after just one semester of studying Agriculture, Eliza was hooked on all that it could offer her.
Eliza's favourite memories from University are those from her time at the Dookie campus.
Studying in Dookie was the best opportunity. The hands-on exposure kept me passionate about agriculture and allowed me to gain experience in areas I had not considered before.
“I also made life-long friends which I will most likely work with in the field. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity and will miss all the good times I had in Dookie throughout my degree.”
Over her time at Melbourne, Eliza seized the opportunity to be a part of the University’s meat judging team, which gave her extensive knowledge about the meat industry, a field she had not considered before. It also allowed her to meet Agriculture students from universities around the world.
To current students, Eliza recommends taking every opportunity that arises, especially to those who don't know where to go with their degree. “Just go for it – you have nothing to lose”.
After enjoying a relaxing summer at home, Eliza will be moving to South Australia as part of Warakirri Dairies' graduate program. Over the 2-year program, she will get to work across the 11 Warrakiri dairy farms, and in their head office to learn about corporate agriculture. Eliza will also have the opportunity to undertake her own research project.
Her top three tips for landing the job? Start looking early, have your resume up to date, and apply for jobs even when you may not fit all the criteria – “don’t let that stop you!”
