The Commerce Opportunity Bursary changed Ewe Jin's perspective on life.
Available through the generosity of an alumni donor, the Commerce Opportunity Bursary was established to assist high achieving Bachelor of Commerce students experiencing financial difficulties.
For Bachelor of Commerce student, Ewe Jin Tan, receiving the Bursary was a complete surprise. “It shook my world up,” said Ewe Jin. “I’d never received anything like it before! When I stopped to think about it, I realised that someone I’d never even met was helping me to achieve my dreams. I asked myself: ‘what can I do right now and going forward in order to give back to the community in a similar way?’"
He chose to volunteer as a tutor at University High School.
“I teach year nine students that need extra attention in English, Maths and Science. Most of the students come from backgrounds where English isn’t their first language and so I help them academically and encourage them to think about more that just getting the grades. When I first came to Australia I struggled with English, so I really understand what they’re going through.”
Receiving the scholarship has completely changed the way Ewe Jin approaches life. “The experience has inspired me not only to reach my academic potential but also to be a good, well-rounded person,” he said. “In the future, I hope to pursue a career in funds management because it is an area that can benefit society in a meaningful way. Whether it be investing in renewable energy, health care or other new ideas, funds management can tangibly contribute to a better world.
“If I could speak to my donor right now I’d say thank you – not only for alleviating my financial burden, but also for inspiring me to think beyond myself and help others in the community. It is something that I will take with me throughout the rest of my life.”
