Survey results reveal alumni attitudes and insights

You are part of a community of more than 400,000 alumni, located in over 180 countries around the world. Fifty-four per cent of you are women, 45% men, with the majority of you aged between 30-49.

Earlier this year more than 6000 alumni participated in our 2019 alumni affinity survey to give us their feedback. If you took part – thank you for giving us your time and input.

Sixty per cent of you said you take great pride in your Melbourne degree and 68% want to maintain a connection to the University. What is certainly clear is how much your experience as a student at the University affects your feelings towards the University now a substantial 89% of you were very or somewhat satisfied with your student experience, and a corresponding 81% maintain those feelings of positivity today. The University understands how crucial it is to provide our students the best possible experience, and investing in the student experience is a key priority. One example of this investment is the development of the new Student Precinct, a building project that will reshape and expand the Parkville campus that has been co-created with students as project partners.

Sixty-two per cent of responders rated the University good or excellent at providing events with an intellectual, educational or cultural focus. However, only 36% of you rated us as good or excellent at providing lifelong learning courses – something that we’re now working on! We are expanding our offerings in this area; stay tuned for more in 2020. There are myriad ways for you to keep involved in the life of the University. Here are the ways you told us that you’d like to keep in touch:

Sixteen per cent of alumni reported that they have volunteered in a wide range of roles, including mentoring students, organising reunions, helping to recruit prospective students, being a guest speaker or serving on a board or committee. Forty-nine per cent rated us as good or excellent at providing volunteering opportunities.

You also told us that e-News is where most of you get your University news (a whopping 74%) – followed by friends, relatives, students and other alumni (33%) and, rounding out the list, social media at 23%. We're glad to hear that e-News is a valuable source of University information for you, and we continually strive to provide you relevant and thought-provoking content. Look out for a refreshed e-News in 2020.

And finally ...

43% of alumni say they would to be more connected to the University, which is music to our ears!
